1.    List four or five of the New Deal programs and explain what they did. How well did these programs work? Are there programs in place today that are similar (or the same)? Compare modern day social and economic assistance programs to the New Deal Programs. Explain why you think they do (or did) work and/or explain why you think they do not (or did not) work.
2.    Do you think that World War II could have been avoided? If so, how? If not, why not? Do modern-day conflicts and war compare with World War II in this respect? Could they be avoided? What can we learn about modern-day wars from World War II?
3.    What were the causes of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States? Could there be another Cold War? If so, how might it start and who would be the key combatants?
4.    Civil Rights, Soviet Communism, the Vietnam War, and the Great Society were all key aspects of or influences on American culture and politics in the 1950s and 60s. Which do you think was the most important and has had the most lasting impact on America? Feel free to choose more than one or to choose an event or influence other than those listed above! Be sure to justify and explain your choice(s).
5.    In the scope of this course, Reconstruction to 1980, what event, idea or individual to you think was the most influential and/or important? Be sure to explain your choice.
