1. Select a current exhibition at a museum, gallery, artist-run/independent art space to visit. Analyse your chosen exhibition in relation to ONE of the lecture topics for this semester: (a) Art + Nature and the Environment (b) Art + the Body and the Histories of Gender and Sexualities (c) Art + the (Colonial) Archive (d) Art + the Senses 2. Consider the title and written synopsis of the exhibition as well as the curatorial theme and concept. How does the exhibition correspond to and relate to the ideas discussed in the chosen lecture topic? 3. Select 3 art works/objects. Reflect on the placement and display of these art works/objects within the exhibition space. • How do these art works/objects fit with the exhibition theme? Do the works/objects selected illustrate and reflect the theme well? Why? How were they displayed within the exhibition space? • Do the chosen works/ objects reflect, critique and/or offer a commentary on the society and culture of its time? Are the chosen work/ objects significant within a particular art movement/genre or a particular time in history? • Have opinions about, and the meaning of the work/object changed over time? How can the meaning, value and context of an artwork/object change when it is seen in differing sites and conditions? Consider the creation and dissemination of knowledge as well as the ways exhibitions are constructed and produced? How might our understanding of art objects be constructed and informed by public displays in museums/galleries? What role do museums, galleries or alternative art spaces play today.
