A fictitious mixed methods study.
. Here is a brief summary of a fictitious mixed methods study. Read the summary and then respond to the following question.
Letzheiser and Hoag wanted to explore disclosure of HIV status to sex partners among HIV-positive men and women. They administered questionnaires in a web-based survey to a sample of 324 ethnically diverse HIV-positive adults being served at clinics for HIV or AIDS. The questionnaire asked questions about the respondents’ sexual activity, methods of protection, number of partners, nature of their partner relationships, HIV status of partners, and timing of any disclosures about their HIV status. After analyzing the survey results, a subsample of 20 respondents (some of whom regularly disclosed and others of whom did not) were interviewed in depth to explore the decision-making process related to disclosure and the perceived consequences of their disclosure decisions. The interviews, which last between 60 and 90 minutes, were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim.
