A scientific experiment published since 2011

  Essay title: “The geneticist Nettie Stevens, the physiologist/biochemist Eduard Buchner and the ecologist Arthur Tansley were all working in 1905. Choose a scientific experiment published since 2011 that you think would interest and excite one of these three scientists, and write an essay to explain it to them, in terms that they would have understood in 1905.” Advice. Your choice must be an experiment from the primary literature. When describing the experiment be mindful of our exercise on how to describe a scientific argument. Good essays will show synthesis: e.g. with what your chosen scientist would have known or was studying, and with the broader present-day knowledge. Avoid common pitfalls: use plain English, in particular, do not use technical terms or scientific knowledge that was unavailable in 1905; there is no need to explain their own work to your scientist, they obviously know that already; there is no need to describe how the whole field has changed since 1905 - just what is relevant to the paper.
