Before the technological revolution, adolescent sexual development was a more private and localized process. Information was primarily acquired through word-of-mouth from peers, limited and often inaccurate media (magazines, television), or formal, often inadequate, sex education in schools. The physical world was the main arena for social and sexual exploration. Teens' understanding of sex and relationships was largely shaped by their immediate social circles and what was directly available to them, with information from adults often being scarce or awkward. This environment meant that experimentation, risk-taking, and learning were more confined to physical spaces and peer networks.
