What about my total collection of journal entries?
1) The poetry and short fiction journal will include commentary on 10 items. A combination of at least 5
poems or short story selections discussed in-class (include a minimum of 2 classical examples: Sappho,
Homer, Virgil or Dante). The remaining half may be poetry or short fiction selected independently by
the student. Commentary should cite research and/or C4 resources.
2) The poetry and short fiction journal must also provide analysis of at least 1 short story from the
reading list.
3) In one part of your journal, analysis should be comparative. For example, you could compare Aeneas
to Odysseus in terms of character, compositional facts or the journey each undertakes. This part of the
journal will require a short essay response.
4) For the presentation choose 5 to 10 images related to your literary selections. Create an oral
presentation that identifies important concepts and/or literary devices. Explain how the images you
select allow you to discuss theme, highlight features of selected works and demonstrate an
understanding of each text. Remember that criticism also involves comparison. Discussion could
compare works in terms genre, cultural comparison or contemporary expressions versus classical
ideals.
Consider the following for your presentation and journal:
a. Physical depiction
b. Historical fact
c. Practical effect
d. Aesthetic quality
e. Inspiration, ideals and morality
