African Americans in the restaurant/service industry.

1) Focus on African Americans in the restaurant/service industry. Specifically I would like to examine the systemic inequalities and racism that exists in the restaurant/service industry and examine how resiliency factors into African Americans achieving success within the field.

2) Research Questions – Does race affect how employees are treated within the restaurant/service industry? Do African Americans experience more racism in the service industry compared to other fields? How can resiliency play a role in African Americans’ ability to achieve success within the industry?

3) I initially was thinking I would use interviews to gain insights about this topic. While that may still be an option or something I try to incorporate, I plan on using surveys to create my project. I DO NOT NEED TO CONDUCT MY OWN STUDY OR RESEARCH FOR THIS CAPSTONE. I AM TO USE THE LITERATUE TO SUPPORT THE METHODS (WHICH WOULD INCLUDE CLEAR STEPS ON HOW I WOULD COMPLETE AND COMPILE THE FINAL PRODUCT)

4) The project will contribute to the study by helping to further illuminate the faults and inequalities that exude from the restaurant/service industry. My goal is for the final project (a brochure or pamphlet) to serve as a learning tool that restaurants and other career fields can utilize.

5) The project will be interdisciplinary in that I will be using knowledge gained from the variety of courses I have taken within this program and my bachelor’s as well. I will draw information and techniques learned from sociology, psychology, public administration, and communications to incorporate within the study.
