As a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)-prepared nurse, considering the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) is crucial because it moves the focus of care beyond the individual patient's symptoms to the underlying environmental and societal factors that influence their well-being. This holistic approach is essential for promoting health equity, improving population health outcomes, and developing sustainable, evidence-based interventions. By addressing the root causes of poor health, DNP nurses can design and implement programs that have a lasting impact on communities, rather than just treating the effects of those causes in a clinical setting.

SDoH Domain: Neighborhood and Built Environment

The SDoH domain of Neighborhood and Built Environment is particularly important to me. This domain includes factors such as housing stability, access to transportation, neighborhood safety, and the availability of healthy foods. My personal and professional experience has shown me that a person's living environment profoundly impacts their health. I've seen firsthand how a lack of safe walking spaces can contribute to chronic diseases like obesity, or how inadequate housing can exacerbate respiratory conditions. I believe that where a person lives should not predetermine their health outcomes, and this domain directly addresses that disparity.
