A Challenging Encounter

One instance where health literacy posed a significant challenge in my practice involved a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The patient, despite multiple hospitalizations, struggled to adhere to their prescribed medication regimen. It became apparent that the patient had difficulty understanding the complex instructions for medication administration, including dosage, timing, and potential side effects. This lack of understanding led to poor adherence, exacerbations of their condition, and ultimately, increased healthcare utilization.

Evidence-Based Strategies to Promote Health Literacy

To address health literacy challenges and improve patient outcomes, healthcare providers can implement several evidence-based strategies:
