Electric Literature once described Charles Yu’s “Hero Absorbs Major Damage” as, “… [about] a hero, know[n] only as The Hero, lead[ing] a small but devoted army across a magical landscape. Or a man play[ing] a video game in his underwear. More likely, both.” Thus, one might say that “HAMD” is a story with two realities: the one inside the video game and the one outside. While this can be confusing at first, this apparent contradiction can be solved with a little writing. Write an essay that argues which reality, the one inside the game or the one outside, is more important to the protagonist.
