Assignment #1: Close Looking Exercise

A word of caution: The exercise here is not to analyze what the image means, but how it works visually. So you should not do any background reading for this assignment. Avoid specific interpretations, especially of
“symbols,” including language – so you do not need to understand or translate any linguistic elements in these images, although you should address their size, placement, colour, the formal qualities of the typography, etc.
Your essay should be approximately 3 pages in length (approx. 800-900 words); see syllabus for formatting requirements.
