Assignment 2, 2015/16

Assignment 2, 2015/16 Due date (off-campus): Tuesday 9th February, 9.00 am AEST Weighting: 40% Requirements: Written assignment (2000 words in total excluding references) Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes assessed: GLO2: Communication to inform and effect change GLO3: Digital literacy, to research and present the evidence GLO4: Critical thinking GLO5: Problem solving Unit Learning Outcomes assessed: ULO3: Evaluate scientific literature and organise derived information to discuss a given real-world nutritional problem logically and at an appropriate standard. ULO4: Develop and logically present plausible solutions to real-world nutritional issues affecting older people, based on current scientific evidence. Assignment 2 topic: Provide justification for an effective community-wide nutritional strategy for the prevention of stroke in older community-dwelling people that encompasses those aged 50 years and older. Develop a policy/action plan that includes ONE nutritional recommendation for an effective communitywide nutritional strategy for reducing stroke in those people aged 50 years and older and living in the community. The strategy needs to focus on a food/diet and excludes the use of supplements. This assignment will include justification for the effectiveness of the chosen nutritional strategy in influencing stroke risk and outcomes, utilizing data from the peer-reviewed literature. N.B. The policy and implementation plan must be demonstrated to be feasible, but a detailed implementation plan is not required. The key emphasis of the assignment is development of ONE effective community-wide strategy, with adequate justification of the effectiveness of your chosen approach with reference to the literature. Assessment criteria: Your assignment will be assessed in the areas shown in the table below (see also more detailed rubric following). Please note that the rubric used by markers for assessing your assignment on-line will be an abbreviated form of the detailed scheme. % Approx. word count guide Introduction/Rationale This section should set the scene and include information on the magnitude of the problem of cardiovascular disease within Australia and how reducing stroke will assist in reducing mortality and morbidity in Australia and maintain quality of life in older people, specifically those aged 50 years and over. 15% 350 Describe ONE nutritional strategy for stroke-prevention Outline the key component of a feasible and effective community-wide NUTRITIONAL intervention plan to reduce stroke in people aged 50 years and above living the community. Indicate how the target population would access the program/product and who would deliver any program, considering the feasibility of involvement by community or non-government organisations, medical and allied health practitioners, and local, federal and/or and State governments. The draft policy and action plan for the proposed implementation of any action should be briefly outlined. N.B. All that is required is a brief description to demonstrate that what you propose is feasible, but this is not the main part of the assignment. 15% 350 Justification of the key components of your strategy Your chosen strategy must be justified as being effective using an evidence-based approach. The likely effectiveness of your chosen strategy should be adequately justified by referring to the peer-revised evidence-based literature. Clearly demonstrate how your chosen nutritional strategy would reduce stroke in older men and women living in the community. N.B. Clear examples of successful similar interventions from the peer-reviewed literature could help to justify your case if they have produced a demonstrated reduction in stroke. 40% 940 Measurement of success, time frame, degree of difficulty Include a description of the key outcome indicators of success. How will you measure success? Include an indication of the likely time frame required for the intervention and the likely time interval needed to see a demonstrable reduction in stroke in the older population. Also comment on the ease/difficulty of maintaining the intervention over the required time interval. N.B. All that is required is a brief description (only a few lines) to provide an indication of time frame required and key outcome indicators. 15% 350 References. Include appropriate references to substantiate claims made in the assignment. Use correct citation (in text citations and bibliography) in the Vancouver referencing style. 5% Overall clarity and presentation.
