Athlete Burnout

Athlete Burnout

Order Description

There are several factors that contribute to the onset and progression of athlete burnout. In order to fully understand the construct of burnout, it is imperative for professionals working in sports organizations to possess an extensive knowledge base of these factors and the nature of their interdependent relationships. The final paper for this class is separated into two components due in Weeks Four and Six.

The paper should be 4000 to 5000 words, include 15 additional scholarly, peer-reviewed articles and be written in APA style.

For the first component of the final paper, address the following constructs and how each can either help prevent or contribute to the onset and progression of athlete burnout:

Differentiate between arousal, stress, and anxiety. What are the different types of anxiety and how do you measure them? Identify one anxiety assessment used with athletes and provide a thorough critique, including a general description of the assessment, item analysis, evaluation of psychometric properties and overall impressions. Would you recommend the use of this assessment? Why or why not? Additionally, describe two anxiety reduction techniques and one multimodal anxiety reduction package. Explain the concept of underactived and describe four arousal inducing techniques.
Discuss the difference between self-confidence and self-efficacy. Describe the benefits of self-confidence and the sources of self-efficacy. Analyze ways to build self-confidence and explain how this can foster adaptive coping. Address how expectations can influence performance.
Assess the importance of concentration in athlete performance in addition to the role it plays in the prevention, or onset and progression of burnout. Be sure to include self-talk, cue words, parking thoughts, nonjudgmental thinking, and internal and external distractions in your analysis. Additionally, discuss various on-site techniques and exercises for improving concentration.
Exercise is generally accepted as an adaptive coping mechanism, however, it is also a spectrum variable within the coping construct. Describe the relationship between exercise, depression, and anxiety. Explain how exercise can enhance mood and psychological well-being and provide specific examples to support your analysis. Discuss reasons why people exercise and the barriers that prevent or reasons why people don’t exercise. Additionally, assess strategies for enhancing exercise adherence. Finally, describe exercise addiction and differentiate between positive and negative addiction. Discuss steps athletes can take to avoid developing a negative addiction to exercise.
Addictive and unhealthy behaviors are a serious concern in Sport and are considered to represent maladaptive coping mechanisms. Differentiate between anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Include the DSM diagnostic criteria in your description. Explain substance use and analyze the physical, psychological, and social predisposing factors that lead to athlete substance use. Describe the major categories of performance-enhancing drugs in Sport as well as prevention and control strategies.
Analyze the prevention and treatment strategies for athlete burnout and provide a concluding synopsis of how athlete burnout differs from organizational burnout.

The second component of the final paper focuses on the characteristics and assessment of organizational and athlete engagement. This portion of the final paper, which should be 4000-5000 words, include at least 10 additional scholarly, peer reviewed articles, and be written in APA format, will address the following:

Based on your analysis of organizational engagement, describe 10 factors that you think are the most important.
Describe the three most significant factors that contribute to or hinder athlete engagement.
Compare and contrast these three factors with the ten components of organizational engagement that you identified in items 1 and 2 of the prompt.
Create your own mixed methods organizational engagement survey that includes a component of appreciative inquiry. Identify your rating scale and explain why you chose either quantitative or qualitative inquiry for each item. The survey should include a minimum of 20 items.
Analyze two coping strategies that could act as either protective or risk factors to building and maintaining engagement, as well as how these mechanisms may confound the results of an engagement survey.
Finally, provide a list of detailed recommendations (a minimum of six) to organizational leaders within a sport organization that addresses the prevention of and recovery from burnout and disengagement in athletes and the general workforce. (These recommendations should be based on the eight topic areas of effective interventions as addressed in Macey, et al., 2009). Furthermore, each recommendation should specifically address a particular population (athletes or the general
