Review the sandbox anecdote on page 36 of the text. Describe how children are using two of the following math concepts in their play: comparing, contrasting, classifying, and seriating. Then describe additional developmentally appropriate materials or guidance an early childhood teacher could provide to expand the children’s sandbox play to include math concepts related to shapes and measurement.
Imagine you are a preschool director giving prospective families a tour of your program. Explain how the preschool classroom is set up to involve children in exploring math in developmentally appropriate ways. Include in your description two examples of meaningful math play that you and the families might observe.
