Being Charlie - drug addiction/family issues

Case Study: Students will choose one character from a movie, television show, or work of literature that struggles with addiction (can be drugs, alcohol, or other). The paper should be 5-7 pages long (12pt font, double-spaced, APA 7 format). Draw from the readings in class and lectures, and cite your information source. Character: Being Charlie - drug addiction/family issues You must also use a minimum of 3 outside sources (sources not presented in class) of Information. Two sources must be scholarly; the other can be from appropriate websites (government, substance abuse agency, etc.). Your book counts as one source! Upload the assignment on D2L. Grades will be based on how well the paper covers the following components, as well as the clarity and organization of your writing: Directions: • Provide a brief overview of the addiction and the success or struggles of the character in coping with their addiction. Include information about the demographic characteristics of the character (e.g., age, gender, race/ethnicity. • Describe the factors that contribute to the individual’s risk and/or coping based on what you have learned in class. Factors to comment on (as relevant) include personality factors (e.g., impulsivity, co-occurring disorder), specific life stressors, genetic or biological factors, availability of social support, and life stress. • Provide a diagnosis for the main character based on DSM-V criteria. Based on that criteria, develop an appropriate treatment plan for your character. Include in your treatment plan any barriers you see to recovery (motivation, family, resources, etc.) Be sure to support your suggestion with research evidence (and cite this evidence). o Discuss a psycho social treatment or treatment technique (e.g., cognitive re-structuring, CRAFT, mindfulness) that could be helpful for the character, given their substance use problem and risk factors. Be sure to support your suggestion with research evidence (and cite this evidence). • Finally, discuss your own personal revelations identified during the execution of this assignment what did you learn about addiction, treatment options, and goal planning as it relates to your character’s population (include information learned in class and other research). In completing this assignment, consider the following questions: o What are the characteristics of the population your character belongs to (this can include educational levels, income levels, housing, etc.)? o What are the strengths and the vulnerabilities of your character? o Discuss the impact addiction has on the character, family, employment, or other aspects of their personal life o Discuss the type of substance use or addiction by the character, what are the cultural influences that may have influenced this etc.? o Discuss factors that would impact interventions used to treat substance abuse for your character, including obstacles or barriers to recovery (think about language, cultural consideration, stages of change, etc.) o Identify and defend interventions you would use to treat the addictive behavior for your character – this is research – back up your treatment options with information from a book or other scholarly articles o Identify and discuss any stereotypes or prejudices, biases, or assumptions related to the treatment that may happen in dealing with this character o Discuss any possible ethical issues Use critical thinking skills when writing your paper. In other words, give some thought to your position instead of simply writing down someone else’s thoughts.
