Biopower
We have also been spending time over the past weeks reflecting upon various ideologies, norms, practices, and policies related to bodies – their classifications, meanings, ‘functions,’ etc. In particular, we have focused a good deal of our attention towards historical and contemporary issues related to reproduction.
First, please briefly define and explain the concept of biopower. What, specifically, does this term mean?
Next, please identify three examples from “The Eugenics Crusade” “Unnatural causes videos” and “Beyond the natural body an archeology of sex hormones”
that demonstrate biopower ‘in action.’ How, specifically, do each of your three examples illustrate the concept of biopower at work? In other words, please illustrate three distinct instances from course materials where we can see attempts at biopower being exercised.
