Briefly define: Virtue Ethics, Utilitarianism and Universal Ethics. How does each of these affect your Core Values and Ethics – can you identify bits and pieces of them in your personal Values and Ethics? Was their inclusion and shaping of your Core Values and Ethics accidental or intentional? Be specific and give examples.
This is the Toothpaste Test – when you get squeezed at work or at home or by both – what comes out? It is not enough to just have a plan for dealing with things when what comes out isn’t good or what you wanted (relates to the final question)? Knowing is not enough – you must have a plan for implementing your knowledge before there is a problem. Do you have one or are you working on one?
15 Points: Briefly define: Ethical Relativism. As you either continue or move into a career, how will Ethical Relativism affect your Core Values and Ethics? Be specific and give examples.
You cannot control what happens to you – but you can control your response. While we rarely effectively plan ahead (we usually lock the barn door after the horse is long gone) – we can know certain things are going to happen. Having a System (train tracks) implies you know who you are, what you want to accomplish, where you are going and how you want to get there – it also takes into account that along the way various “stakeholders” will try to hijack, derail and/or stop your train. Do you have a plan for remaining true to your Core Values and Ethics – if not, are you working on one?
15 Points: Develop a simple, Personal Social Responsibility plan (Chapter 4) to deal with your life based upon your Core Values and Personal Ethics. The PSR should contain:
1) Your value chain (what is most important to least important as you confront
Ethical Dilemmas). This would be your version of the Triple Bottom Line (People, Planet, Profit) – but you need to replace the three P’s with your own
stated Core Values (eg: Diet Coke, Money and Movies). This should include your personal life (family, children, and parents) along with your business life since the two cannot be separated (but money and business will often try.)
2) How will you balance the Strategic, Altruistic and Ethical responses in your life, especially when applying for a job or promotion, dealing with work when what they want is not right or just finding the balance between personal and professional? There are times when you will do good for the sake of doing good, other times where you must do good to fix something you “broke” and other times when you will do good just to get noticed. How will you use Dobrin or Kohlberg or the Sleep Test (or any of the other models) to make sure you have the proper balance?
