Childbirth Education Paper Rubric
Purpose: examine current trends in Childbirth Education, and utilize principles of critical thinking, research and evidence-based practice when creating a teaching plan for childbearing families.

Each student will be expected to attend one Childbirth Preparation class, lasting a minimum of 2 hours. Classes must be pre-approved by faculty as noted on syllabus.

The paper must include the following:
Summary of the Childbirth Class and Childbirth Educator
Instructor (10 points)
What was the instructors name, training and work experience
What was the instructors teaching philosophy?
What methods did the instructor use to teach the class?
Class (10 points)
Describe the setting of the class
Describe the attendees of the class
Briefly, in paragraph format, describe the topics covered during the class
Teaching Plan
Choose one topic that you think should have been included in this Childbirth Class, but wasnt.
Topic
Articulate what topic should have been included in the class, and why you believe it is important. Be sure that that the topic that you pick makes sense. Ask yourself: is this something that a pregnant client really should know about? (5 points)
Write a summary (teaching plan) of what should have been taught. Pretend that you are teaching a class. Describe what you would teach pregnant clients about this missing information. Make sure that you present this in a logical and informative manner. (20 points)
Use a minimum of THREE reputable journal articles to verify the information in your teaching plan. Sources must be recent (published within the last 5 years). (5 points each)
Handout (30 points)
Create one handout based on your additional information. This is the information from your teaching plan. Use the following criteria to create your handout:
?The handout should be only one page, but you may utilize both the back and the front of the page
?The handout should be colorful and eye-catching
?The handout should be written for the general public (6th grade reading level, layman terminology).
?The handout should be written in a logical order and include:
A description of the topic youve chosen
Why it is important for pregnant clients
Important teaching points, which may include: signs and symptoms, when to seek help, specific guidelines for what to do or what to avoid
Additional resources (where can the reader go to find additional information?)
Format (10 points)
Spelling
Punctuation
Grammar
Tense
APA Format: title page, page numbers, running head, use of numbers, use of abbreviations, citations, reference page)

Total: 100 possible points

Deductions
The paper MUST be submitted in a 2-pocket folder. ALL articles used in this paper must be included in the folder. (-2 points for each article NOT submitted)
The grading sheet MUST be submitted along with the paper. (-2 points for failing to submit)
The childbirth educator MUST sign the grading sheet verifying class attendance. (-5 for failing to submit)
Late submissions will be penalized 5 points per day.
