Chinese Buddhist sculpture and Japanese Buddhist sculpture Analysis

Compare a Chinese Buddhist sculpture with a Japanese Buddhist sculpture. The first art work (Chinese one) is here: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/42711. The second art work (Japanese one) is here: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/44838. The instructions are: In this assignment, you will consider the different ways the Buddha/Bodhisattva can be represented in different cultures by comparing these Chinese and Japanese religious images. This type of sculpture was made specifically to be used in worship in a Buddhist temple complex. The Chinese stone sculpture is most likely from Yungang caves. The Japanese sculpture was most likely made for use in a Buddhist temple. Please consider how the deities are portrayed and you can refer to some of the same issues of posture, body, clothing, movement, etc. that are listed above for the comparison of tomb sculptures. Also think about how the material (stone vs. wood) impacts on the presentation of the deity. In addition to doing a detailed visual analysis, I also want you to consider the evolution of the Buddha image from China (through Korea) to Japan, how that transmission of Buddhism changes the Buddha image and how that is reflected in these two sculptures. Also think about how they were used in worship and why they look the way they do. You should use your class notes and readings for further information. In addition to the questions asked about each comparison, please feel free to elaborate on any aspects of the sculpture that you think is important, as well as how the fabrication process might impact on the depictions of each image.
