Classical conditioning and operant conditioning in the media
1. Find two examples of classical conditioning and two examples of operant conditioning in the media (from a TV show, commercial, or print ad)
4. Describe the media source in detail – assume that your audience has not seen it. 5. For the two classical conditioning examples: a. Identify the NS, UCS, UR, CS, and CR from the perspective of the audience (you, the viewer), not a character inside the commercial itself. b. Explain why each part was given each label (example: “the bell would be the NS because it didn’t mean anything to the dogs before conditioning…”). c. Discuss how the conditioned behavior might be extinguished (or “un-conditioned”). 6. For the two operant conditioning examples: a. Identify and explain the type of consequence given (positive or negative, reward or punishment). b. Identify and explain the schedule of reinforcement used (or assumed to be used, if one is not specifically stated) (ratio or interval, fixed or variable).
