COM: Audience Analysis

A key factor of good public speaking is understanding your audience. This is especially important when preparing arguments and persuasive appeals. Thus, for this activity you need to present the argument or thesis for your persuasive speech, and do a little audience analysis of your own based on comments in the discussion. Post a new thread with your topic/argument for your persuasive speech. Then, ask your classmates the following: Do you strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree, or strongly disagree with this argument? What questions do you hope this speech answers? What more would you want to learn during the course of this speech?

Sample Solution

Topic/Argument for Persuasive Speech: The argument for my persuasive speech is that advanced practice nurses (APNs) should be able to practice independently, without the supervision of a physician. I believe that APNs have the education, training, and experience to provide high-quality care to patients, and that they should be able to practice to the full extent of their licenses.

Audience Analysis: Based on the comments in the discussion, I believe that my audience is generally supportive of APNs and their ability to practice independently. However, there are some people who may have concerns about the safety of APN-led care. I will need to address these concerns in my speech by providing evidence that APNs are just as safe as physicians, and that they can provide high-quality care to patients. Questions for Classmates:
  • Do you strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree, or strongly disagree with the argument that APNs should be able to practice independently?
  • What questions do you hope this speech answers?
  • What more would you want to learn during the course of this speech?
Additional Information: I will be providing evidence to support my argument from a variety of sources, including research studies, professional organizations, and government agencies. I will also be sharing personal stories from APNs who have been practicing independently. I believe that this is an important topic, and I am excited to share my research and findings with my classmates. I hope that by the end of my speech, everyone will be convinced that APNs should be able to practice independently.
