Compare and contrast essay
Select ONE of the following topics for your essay. Remember that to compare means to discuss similarities and to contrast means to discuss differences. For this essay you will do one or the other, not both.
Compare OR contrast two television shows, movies, or books.
Compare OR contrast two public figures. A public figure can include a politician, an athlete, an actor, or any other person in the public eye.
Compare OR contrast two countries/cultures on their ideas about a particular issue, such as gender.
When selecting the two subjects to compare/contrast, make sure they are comparable. That is to say, make sure they fall within the same general category. If you select two books, they should be two romance novels or two biographies. Comparing two books that are too dissimilar can make it more difficult to come up with points of comparison. For example, comparing a biography of George Washington to Stephen King's novel "It," may prove a difficult task. However, comparing Stephen King's "It" with Bram Stoker's "Dracula" may make for a more productive comparison.
