To write this essay you will need to obtain and read these three significant and scholarly perspectives on learning,

– Zimmerman, B. J. (2000), Self-efficacy: An essential motive to learn. Contemporary Educational Psychology, 25(1), 82-91.
– Wenger, E. (2000), Communities of practice and social learning systems. Organization 7(2): 225.
– Engeström, Y. (2001), Expansive learning at work: toward an activity theoretical reconceptualization. Journal of Education and Work, 14(1), 133-156.
You may refer to other texts and journal papers if you wish. However, please note that it is much more important to demonstrate a good understanding of the three set texts than it is to find extra articles. An insightful, well written essay that only refers to the three set texts will score significantly higher marks than a badly written essay that cites a lot of references.

An assignment should be an argument. It should present a justified point of view. You should discuss a problem and not simply narrate events or describe an institution. It may be necessary to devote some space to narrative or description, but the major task will be the weighing and the assessing of evidence and arguing from that evidence to a solution of the problem. Have a clear idea of what the problem is and what is involved. Look at the problem from more than one perspective. Part of your task is to assess and criticise the work of other writers, over and above any sourced from prescribed subject readings. Also, wherever possible, you should provide recent and relevant evidence to support your argument.
Plan your assignment carefully. When you are taking notes from book, record the page numbers so that you can refer to them exactly when you are writing your assignment. Write it in clear, simple and grammatical prose.

Quality of content and analysis (60 marks) – How well have you demonstrated an understanding of the set readings? To what extent does your contrasting and comparing show that you have thought about the topic? It is important in this essay that you articulate what you have learned in your own words rather than through direct quotes from other authors.
Style and presentation of the paper (20 marks) – How clearly is your paper written? Have you taken care with spelling, punctuation, paragraphs and grammar? Is the Harvard referencing system used correctly? Is your essay well structured, with an introduction, logical flow of paragraphs and a conclusion? The essay should be typed using 1.5 line spacing and presented on A4 paper with margins of at least 25 mm. Use the Harvard referencing system and make sure your reference list is formatted in alphabetical order of authors’ last names. For more information on referencing format refer to Section 8.2.
Depth of practical understanding (20 marks) – How well have you considered the implications of the ideas in the set readings for human resource development?
