Compare/ contrast philosophers
Ethics, as a philosophical endeavor, begins with simple questions like “what ought I do?”. It asks what the best way to live is: How do I live in relation to others? How do I live in relation to the earth and other non-human things? How do I expect others to treat me? And so on.
Take two philosophers we’ve discussed this semester and compare/contrast what how their ideas help us to answer such questions. One philosopher/text should be from the Western tradition, another from the Non-Western tradition. Use the act of comparison to state which you find more useful and argue for their position.
Remember, our Western philosophers include Plato, Descartes, those modern Europeans, Audre Lorde, and Kwame Nkrumah (sort of!). Our Non-Western philosophies include Indigenous thought (Vine Deloria Jr.), Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. The text on environmental ethics draws upon both Western and Non-Western philosophers and can be used for either position.
