Crime Analysis

    For this exercise you will chose a solved or unsolved serial crime, such as murder, rape, bank robbery and establish a basic profile. To do so you will answer the following questions and thoroughly as possible, in complete sentences. Your answers should be more involved than the examples given. The examples are given to help you get started. 1) Offender name and aliases (if known, if unknown you may list suspects) i.e. Jack the Ripper, suspects: Montague Druitt, Michael Ostrog, James Maybrick (there were a lot of others, this is an example) 2) birthdate, age at time of crimes and birthplace (if known) I.e. born sometime in the mid 1800s, thought to be at least in his thirties around the time of the crimes, most likely born in London or the surrounding area, believed to be British rather than someone from a foreign country. 3) Crimes committed at least five murders, perhaps more than a dozen in London, France and the United States 4) what did the crimes have in common? Death was caused by the slashing of the throat, followed by mutilation and the occasional taking of internal organs that were later sent to law enforcement with letters 5) where did the crimes occur? the crimes took place in London's east end, in the white chapel neighborhood near the ten bells pub 6) what did the victims have in common? the victims were all prostitutes. They were known in the neighborhood and all but one was actively soliciting in the area 7) how were the crimes committed? it is surmised that the women were attacked from behind, once their throats were slit, their bodies were mutilated 8) how did the offender avoid detection? the crimes took place at night in areas with sparse policing and poor lighting 9) how did the offender leave the scenes? it is thought that the offender may have left the scene by slipping into the sewer system 10) what was the offender known for? taunting messages to the police, communication with the press, signs of medical knowledge in the manner of dissection 11) what was the offender’s motive? Surmised to be dislike for women and a desire for attention and notoriety 12) how often did the crimes take place? The five murders definitively linked to Jack the Ripper took place between April 3rd and December 20th of 1888 13) how was the offender caught and by whom? Jack the Ripper was never caught. He was actively pursued by Scotland Yard under the direction of Frederick Aberline Exercise 2 Profiling is not an exact science. It does not work like it is portrayed on television and in films. Exercise 3 For this assignment you are going to examine the media actions in a case of your choosing. It is absolutely necessary that you cite your work on this one, as you are going to be reviewing media stories. You must include at least four media articles on your case of choice. Your articles must include - one from when the crime first occurred, one from when an arrest was made, one from during the court case and one after sentencing in the case. Do you read the emails from campus security about crime around campus? Do you watch documentaries about crime or listen to crime podcasts?
