Criminal Investigation

  1. As you have seen and read, prosecution of a crime may hinge on a single piece of evidence. When processing a crime scene, certain general protocols should be followed for every case. If you could choose only four (4) steps to include in a crime scene processing manual, what would they be and why are these the most important? Which Saint Leo core values would apply to each of your four steps? Support your rationale with information from your text and/or other readings.

  3. Sexual assault/battery is the type of crime that can be difficult to discuss, especially if the victim(s) are young children or elderly individuals. Are the statutes different dependent on the types of victims in these cases? For this discussion board, you will first do web research on your state’s statutes, or another state you’ve resided in, for this violent crime. What are the basic components of the statute? List the statute title, legal terminology associated with the statute, and the website at which you located the information. What core value is most relevant in investigating sexual battery cases?
  4. Researchers have suggested that individuals who commit burglaries and other property crimes will eventually move on to “bigger” crimes such as assault and other crimes against persons. What aspects of burglary investigation would lead to this suggestion by researchers? Support your rationale with information from your text and additional readings and research.
5.Locate a local/state law enforcement agency (police department/sheriff’s office) within the United States who has a dedicated cold case unit/squad and describe their protocol for choosing what cases to “revive.” Based on the readings you’ve completed, what guidelines did the agency use to revive this cold case? List the URL so that other students can access the information to use in responding to your post.
6.No matter how old you are, everyone remembers or has heard about the Orenthal James Simpson trial. It has been said that the testimony of forensic experts is what dominated the trial. Conduct some internet research on the Simpson trial, focusing on the forensic evidence presentations and experts. Do you believe each side presented the information as best they could? Do you think the experts maintained their integrity and honesty throughout the testimony? If you simply looked at the physical evidence, would you consider Simpson guilty of the crimes he was charged with? For the purposes of this class, PLEASE stick to the facts of the case and do NOT comment on any perceived racial inferences as they were made in the media. Simply review the physical evidence and the testimony of the forensic experts to support your decision. Utilize the readings and your internet research to assist in formulating your response. Also, list the URLs so that other students can access the information to use in responding to your post.
  5. Based on the mock case scenario you are presenting, create a list of five (5) questions you would ask if you were a defense attorney arguing the other side of your case. From a prosecutor’s standpoint, what is the strength of your case?
