Cross-cultural perception, values, socialicing and development

Time for some critical thinking about cross-cultural perceptions, values and development and socialization. It is clear that different cultures and societies around the world share some common human values. However, it is also noted that different cultures and societies may have very different perceptions of events, different values, and even very different ways of socializing and developing the their children and young adults. In this conference for earned participation credit I ask you to think about the ways that different cultures socialize and promote the cultural development of their children and young adults. Please answer the following questions. Be specific and support your statements with citations from the readings or other reputable research for full earned credit. 1. Which cultural practices for socializing the young among immigrants into the US and Western Europe are most likely to cause friction, misunderstanding or resentment, or even conflict, with Western values? Why? 2. Conversely, which features or practices or behaviors in our US culture might be offensive to members of more traditional cultures in Africa or Asia or South America? Why? Again, be specific. 3. What is the solution, if any, to resolving these differences? Comments please, but no later than the end date in the Syllabus. Remember, you must also respond to some of your classmates.
