ELM-factors and influence

You have been asked by your principal to make a presentation about the relationship between motivation and engagement to present to the teachers at your school. Create a 10 slide digital presentation that you will narrate through GoReact by using the screen share function. You must have your camera on during the narrated presentation. Include the following in your presentation:

The difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, providing at least one classroom example for each.
The relationship between engagement and motivation.
The effect culture and parental attitudes about education have on student engagement and motivation.
At least three research-based instructional strategies and/or learning activities that enhance student engagement and/or increase student motivation. At least one strategy or activity should support collaborative learning.
Signs of disengagement and an explanation of why disengagement may be occurring.
At least two research-based approaches that teachers can use to reengage students.

Slide 4: The Reciprocal Relationship

Motivation ⟷ Engagement: A Vicious or Virtuous Cycle

Motivation Drives Engagement

When a student is motivated (especially intrinsically), they are more likely to invest energy, attention, and effort into learning.

Example: High Intrinsic Motivation → Increased Effort (Engagement)

Engagement Fuels Motivation

When a student is deeply engaged in a task that is challenging but achievable, they experience success and competence. This positive feeling reinforces their belief in themselves, increasing future motivation.

Example: Successful Engagement (Mastery) → Increased Intrinsic Motivation

The Danger: Disengagement causes both to spiral downward.

Slide 5: The Influence of External Factors

Culture & Parental Attitudes

1. Culture & Educational Values

Cultural context shapes expectations around achievement, group work, and teacher authority.

In some cultures, collective success or avoiding failure may be a stronger motivator than individual performance.

Effect: Students from varying backgrounds may respond differently to competitive grading systems or individual public praise.

2. Parental Attitudes & Beliefs

When parents actively value and model learning (e.g., reading, asking questions, attending school events), it establishes a high perceived value for education at home.

Conversely, if education is treated as a low priority or a chore, the student may inherit that low motivation.

Effect: A supportive and positive parental attitude acts as a powerful extrinsic and intrinsic motivator for the student.

Slide 6: Research-Based Strategy 1: The Power of Choice (Motivation)

Strategy: Autonomy-Supportive Classrooms

Basis: Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan) states that autonomy is a fundamental psychological need that fosters intrinsic motivation.

Slide 3: Two Types of Motivation

Where Does the Drive Come From?

1. Intrinsic Motivation

Definition: The drive to act comes from internal pleasure, interest, or satisfaction. The activity itself is the reward.

Key Concept: Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose.

Classroom Example: A student spends extra time reviewing a science topic because they are personally curious about how it works, not for the grade.

2. Extrinsic Motivation

Definition: The drive to act comes from a desire for external rewards or to avoid punishment.

Key Concept: Rewards, Praise, Grades, Compliance.

Classroom Example: A student completes all assigned homework meticulously because they want to earn bonus points or maintain a perfect GPA
