Some things are designed to impact emotions, such as advertising and movies. Others might be more focused on social aspects of design, such as an amusement park or social media site.
Share a design that has moved you emotionally and socially. Discuss its impact on you and why it might have been so profound. How might you use these reflections in your design?
Sample Answer
Design is often at its most powerful when it stops being a "product" and starts being a "bridge." For me, the design that has had the most profound emotional and social impact is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., designed by Maya Lin.
Emotional Impact: The Mirror of Grief
Emotionally, the "Wall" is a masterclass in minimalism and psychological resonance. Unlike traditional monuments that tower over the visitor, Lin’s design is carved into the earth.
The Reflective Surface: The choice of polished black granite is ingenious. As you look at the names of the fallen, you see your own reflection looking back through the text. It forces an immediate, intimate connection between the living and the dead.
The Chronological Wound: The names are listed chronologically by date of casualty, not alphabetically. This turns the wall into a timeline of the war, making the sheer volume of names feel like a physical weight that grows as you walk deeper into the earth at the memorial's center.
Social Impact: A Space for Collective Healing
Socially, the design transformed how the public interacts with history. Before this memorial, many monuments were "objects to be looked at." The Wall is a "space to be experienced."
