Engagement and Counseling Skills in a First Session

As a child and adolescent counselor, you will need a variety of skills ready for use during every counseling session. Considering the almost unlimited range of situations, influential factors, and challenges that you may experience, there is no such thing as being over-prepared.

or this discussion, you will begin by watching a 40 minute video clip of an experienced child and adolescent counselor, Dr. Violet Oaklander, in a first session with a 13-year-old boy named Blake. As you watch the video, think about the various skills that you have read about in chapters 2 – 4, in The Elements of Counseling Children and Adolescents.


After you’ve watched the video, develop a main response in which you address the following:
Answer every question please:

How did Dr. Oaklander engage Blake in the counseling session? What did she do to build a relationship with him?
Identify at least 3 microskills that Dr. Oaklander used in this session and provide a specific example for each. Why do you think Dr. Oaklander chose each of those skills? How effective did you find them to be?
