Penelope is a nursing clinical instructor working with senior nursing students on a medical surgical unit- Students have already received didactic content and
simulation practice on initiating intravenous (IV) therapy. A nursing student approaches Penelope and requests to initiate an IV in her newly admitted patient-
Penelope is familiar with this particular student and the student’s history of Multiple Sclerosis- Today, the student has noticeable hand tremors- Penelope
makes a decision to not allow the student to start the IV due to fine motor skill impairment- The student states, “I know I have hand tremors but please let me
at least try to start an IV.”
