Instructions: Observe a “day in the life” of a person who is employed in a kinesiology related career that particularly interests you (coach, physical education/ kinesiology instructor, physical therapist, sports psychologist, etc.). Observe the types of duties and responsibilities that are related to the job. Observe how the person interacts with those around him or her (patients, colleagues, employers, clients, students, players, etc.). Communicate with the person you are observing to gain insight into the career you may choose to pursue. Some of the questions you can ask during your observation/visitation:
What does a typical day look like for…..PT, PTA, athletic trainer, coach, chiropractor etc.?
What are some of the best aspects of the job?
What are some of the challenges of the job?
What would you recommend to someone who is looking into pursuing this career?
How hard was it to get a job?
Which part of your academic journey was the most important in becoming confident in your job skills?
Are there any questions that I haven’t asked and you think I should’ve asked?
And any other questions that you personally find insightful.
Write a two-page summary of the observational experience at the career of your interest. Provide insight into the career of your interest. List the name and job title of the person that you observed in the work place. Consider the following questions when writing the summary:
Could you see yourself enjoying the job that you observed?
Was the experience at that career what you thought it would be?
What surprised you? What was different than you had expected?
What are the challenges of the job?
What are the best aspects/ rewards of the job?
What does a typical day look like?
What qualities/ characteristics are most beneficial in the career of your choice?
