This week topic includes gender identity and sexuality. Gender identity is one’s self concept as female, male, or trans-gendered (American Psychological Association, 2006). Gender Identity has been a topic in our country in the last few years. When an individual’s gender identity and sex are harmonious, that individual may label themselves as transsexual or another member of the trans-gendered category. This week’s module, discusses that early childhood development, children stick by gender stereotypes and can be harsh to those who do not abide by these stereotypes; this may lead to ostracizing their peers (bullying/aggression). I also found it funny, how some children believe they can change genders if they do not follow these set gender stereotypes. Gender segregation is the process of separating individuals according to their biological sex, among children; this is enforced by the “popular” children. According to this week’s reading, these gender stereotypes and gender segregation, allows issues and prevents the girls and boys from getting along.
Choose two questions you see fit to address:*
(A) Why do you think the popular children enforce gender segregation? Do you think they are getting some type of benefit (intrinsic or/and extrinsic) from doing this? Do you think they are even aware of themselves doing this?
(B) Recently I have seen and read numerous articles of young children as much as in elementary school, advising that they internally feel that they do not match their biological gender. Some of these children have parents who even have them on hormone therapy. Do you believe a child can say they are not assigned the correct gender? Should a child be given the opportunity or be able to receive hormone therapy in order to satisfy their internal feeling of gender? Can a child even say they are assigned the incorrect gender, how does one know? Be mindful and respectful of your response and other opinions; we all are adults here.
(C) Do you think individuals participating in sports events should be allowed to partake in the events that are biologically meant for a particular gender or should an individual be allowed to participate in any gender sect for that sport based on what gender the participant identifies with?
(D) Social learning Theory proposes the reason why there are gender roles along with gender stereotypes; they are simply learned and pushed through to the mass. Do you think through the Social Learning Theory, that it is plausible to teach children to not believe or conform to society’s implemented ideas of what a female or male should do, wear, say, or behave?
