George Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant"
Assignment: George Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant" describes a rather prosaic or mundane situation: being a
local police officer asked to shoot a troubled elephant. But it also reveals some important critiques about the
nature of the work that he was consigned to. For this assignment, I'd like you to pick up cues in his writing to
describe Orwell's attitude toward his work. Specifically, try to answer the following question: "Why is Orwell so
frustrated with his job?" Try to answer it as thoughtfully as you can. You could probably answer the question in
one sentence if you were really pressed for time but here I'd like you to elaborate. Think of ways to expand on
Orwell's critique not only of his job, but other aspects of his life as well, in ways that relate back to his work.
