HANDLING DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS—COMMUNICATION ANALYSIS

As a reminder, you will continue to act as a manager who has been co-leading an important project with a fellow manager. Your colleague held up delivery of the project and made comments expressing his displeasure to others. You scheduled an in-person conversation with your colleague to discuss the matter and conducted the conversation with your colleague using an online simulation platform. This week, you will reflect on your simulation experience and follow up with your colleague via a draft email to document the results of your conversation. As you complete Part 2 of your Assignment, be sure to include specific examples where applicable, as well as relevant citations from the Learning Resources, the Walden Library, and/or other appropriate academic sources.   Once you have completed the online, simulated one-on-one conversation with your peer, you will analyze your experience and then write up your analysis of effective communication skills and approaches that can be applied in any professional conversation—but specifically when you need to address conflict of any kind. As part of your reflection, you will consider the ways in which you can not only improve your communication skills going forward but also use these skills to be a more effective change agent. Be sure to address the following: Did you reach an agreement that takes into account the needs, concerns, and perspectives of both stakeholders? Why or why not? What impact (positive and negative, if possible) did your preparation have on the outcome? Provide a rationale to support your analysis. What best practices/strategies (from the Learning Resources) did you incorporate into your conversation? For each best practice/strategy, be sure to include a minimum of one scholarly source for support.

Reaching Agreement:

Yes / No (Circle one)

Preparation's Impact:

Positive Impact:

  • Explain how your preparation (e.g., outlining talking points, anticipating colleague's concerns) helped navigate the conversation effectively.
  • Briefly mention a specific instance from the simulation where preparation was beneficial.

Negative Impact (if applicable):

  • Were there any aspects of your preparation that hindered the conversation's flow?
  • Did you over-prepare, leading to inflexibility in adapting to the situation?

Examples and Citations:

Best Practices and Strategies:

  • Identify at least two best practices from the Learning Resources you incorporated in your conversation.

  • For each practice, provide a scholarly source and explain its application in the simulation. Here are two potential examples with sources:

  • Active Listening: You actively listened to your colleague's concerns by summarizing their points and using reflective statements. This fostered trust and created a safe space for open communication (Stone et al., 2014).

  • "I" Statements:* You framed your concerns using "I" statements, like "I felt frustrated when..." This avoided accusatory language and focused on the impact of your colleague's actions (Gottman & Gottman, 2007).

Scholarly Sources:

  • Stone, D. B., Patton, B., & Heen, S. (2014). Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most. Penguin Random House.
  • Gottman, J. M., & Gottman, J. (2007). And Baby Makes Three: The Eight Essential Stages of Raising Healthy and Happy Children. Hachette Books.

Additional Considerations:

  • Reflect on areas for improvement in your communication style.
  • How could you better manage your emotions in future difficult conversations?
  • Consider how these communication skills can make you a more effective change agent.
  • For example, by actively listening and fostering open communication, you can encourage buy-in for new initiatives.

By reflecting on your strengths and areas for improvement, you can refine your communication skills to address conflict constructively and navigate challenging situations like the simulated conversation.
