We began our tour through American Cinema with Citizen Kane, a fragmented biography composed of multiple views of the title character presented through the highly subjective recollections of assorted individuals who sometimes seem to be contradicting one another. These potentially unreliable narrators and witnesses – characters who may or may not be telling the truth, even to themselves – are featured in many of the films we’ve seen, notably Sunset Blvd, Five Easy Pieces, Taxi Driver, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Stories We Tell.  Why and how does this sort of ambiguity become thematically significant in each of these five individual films, and what are some of the specific ways in which we are alerted to the possibility that what we seem to be hearing or seeing may not be the whole truth? Finally, how does the style of each of these films – as well as the arguably more “politically charged” films On the Waterfront and Do the Right Thing – enhance the director’s vision?
