How journalism has changed as a result of the internet

  (1) Briefly summarize what the internet is, including why it was developed and by whom. (2) Describe how journalism has changed as a result of the internet, including the loss of advertising revenue, the professional adjustments that have been required of traditional journalists, the change in gatekeeper roles and the influence of social media. (3) Describe how these changes both reflect and shape culture. We have not gone into a lot of detail about this in class; this is your opportunity to engage in critical thinking and demonstrate how you can apply what you’ve been learning. (4) Finally, explain whether you think the internet’s impact on journalism has overall been positive or negative—or both—and provide a rationale for your position.
