Description
Chapter 9 describes experimental designs which have only one independent variable (IV). Even with designs this simple, the researcher must still determine how many levels of the IV to present and whether or not to have a control group. For each hypothesis listed below, identify the optimal number of treatment levels and whether or not a control group is warranted. If so, what would the control group look like? Finally, provide the operational definition for the IV and dependent variable (DV) in each example:
Students solve math problems more quickly when they are with a group of people.
People have faster reaction times in the morning.
Pictures of familiar faces are easiest to identify when they are right-side up.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective treatment for depression.
Drinking a can of caffeinated soda before a test improves performance.
Walking a mile at a brisk pace makes you feel happier.
