Implicit Bias
Consider how automatic components of implicit bias are present in the real world in your personal interactions with others (attitudes and behaviors), such as in conversations with friends or coworkers, or in the media, such as in the news.
Choose two specific personal incidents and one you observed in the media, and, based on information from the Blaine and Brenchley textbook, think about possible causes of the implicit bias you observed and complete the following five tasks (omit identifiers, such as names of people or businesses):

1. In a work setting, I noticed that a coworker was more likely to give positive feedback to female employees than to male employees. This bias was evident in the way that the coworker gave feedback, as well as in the content of the feedback. For example, the coworker would often compliment female employees on their appearance, while they would give male employees more specific feedback about their work. I believe that this bias may have been caused by the coworker's own implicit associations between women and beauty.Full Answer Section
I was watching a news segment about a recent shooting in a large city. The news anchor was describing the suspect, and they mentioned that he was a young black man. The anchor then went on to say that "young black men are often involved in shootings." This statement was clearly biased, as it suggested that all young black men are criminals. I believe that this bias may have been caused by the anchor's own implicit associations between black men and crime.- I was talking to a friend about their experience applying for jobs. They told me that they had been rejected from several jobs, even though they had the qualifications for the positions. They said that they felt like they were being discriminated against because they are a woman. I believe that this bias may have been caused by the implicit biases of the hiring managers.
