Joe Rogan came under criticism for statements made on his show regarding COVID and vaccines.
In early 2022, podcast host Joe Rogan came under criticism for statements made on his show regarding COVID and vaccines. Critics argued that Spotify should ban his podcast from their platform, while supporters defended Rogan's right to free speech.
Under the title "Should Spotify ban Joe Rogan?," The Guardian published a series of five short comments, each written by a different columnist taking a position on the controversy.
For this journal, students will follow Van Cleave's approach to breaking down the argument in Obama's speech on Syria. Students will choose one of the five arguments presented in the Guardian article and render it into standard form by identifying its premises and conclusions. The five steps are:
Identify the main conclusion
Identify all the possible premises
Determine if any of the premises constitute a sub-argument
Determine if there are any unstated premises
Put the argument is standard form
Unlike the Obama argument analyzed by Van Cleave, the arguments here are much shorter, so there will not be as many premises as in the Obama argument. Remember, the purpose of this assignment is not to determine whether the chosen argument is true or false. Instead, the purpose is to determine the structure of the argument. While other journal entries are required to be at least 500 words, this one may be shorter without penalty. This journal entry is graded on how accurately the argument is put into standard form using the skills we studied this week.
