Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of chattel slavery in the United States in 1865.  As we've been reading in some of our texts, particularly in The Deep by Rivers Solomon and Undrowned by Alexis Pauline Gumbs an important part of celebrating one's liberation is honoring the past.

In recognition of Juneteenth and in alignment with our course theme, for extra credit: The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture's efforts to recover sunken slave ships through "The Slave Wrecks ProjectLinks to an external site.."

Thoughts on The Slave Wrecks Project

The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture's "Slave Wrecks Project" is, in my opinion, an profoundly important and moving initiative. My immediate thoughts are ones of deep respect and appreciation for the dedication to historical truth, remembrance, and the honoring of those lost to the transatlantic slave trade.

Here's why I find it so impactful:

  • Reclaiming Lost Histories: For centuries, the stories of those who perished during the Middle Passage were largely submerged, both literally and figuratively. The Slave Wrecks Project actively reclaims these lost histories, bringing to light the physical evidence of their suffering, resilience, and humanity. It transforms abstract numbers into tangible sites of memory.
