Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Rosemarry Ruether
The textbook and the other material we have read this semester highlight the crucial role that responses to the
“stranger” play in how groups of people interact with and treat each other. Using the lives and work of Martin
Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and AT LEAST ONE OTHER PERSON we have read about this semester, discuss
the ideas they used to formulate responses to the major social problems they faced. Pay particular attention to
the ideas they use to talk about those who are different than them (i.e., “the stranger”). How do they humanize
the stranger? In what ways do their religious traditions inform their understanding and actions? Do their ideas
change over time?
