Objective
The project aims to develop a robotic vehicle that can be controlled remotely and can sense metals at shallow ground depths, such as around wrecks or lakeside habitats. The robot is controlled by a remote using RF technology. It consists of a metal detector circuit interfaced to the control unit that alerts the user to the presence of a metal component in the ground. The robotic vehicle will be used to search the shores of Burrator Reservoir during the summer when the water levels become low in the vicinity of Longstone Manor.
Introduction
The remains of Longstone Manor House exist on a promontory projecting into Burrator Reservoir in Dartmoor. The manor house was first built around 1500 and then rebuilt in 1633 by Walter Elford. When the adjacent Burrator Reservoir was being constructed to provide a reliable water source for the City of Plymouth in the late 1800s (and again in the 1920s), the manor house and the surrounding buildings were deserted, stones were subsequently removed for use elsewhere, and the building fell into ruins. Some parts of the main house remains are buried and submerged off the shores of Burrator Reservoir. During the summer period, water levels can become low and some of the remains can become exposed. Metal detectors are valuable archaeological tools that can be used to recover metallic objects that are invisible to the naked eye. In this project we will develop and use a robotic vehicle-based metal detection system to search for metallic items (coins, gate fixtures, bolts, etc.) that may still be buried in the shores near Longstone Manor.
Implementation
An Arduino Uno microcontroller is used for the desired operation in both transmitter and receiver. At the transmitting using push buttons, commands are sent to the receiver to control the movement of the robot either to move forward, backward and left or right etc. At the receiving end motors are interfaced to the microcontroller where they are used for the movement of the vehicle. The RF transmitter acts as a RF remote control that has the advantage of adequate range (up to 200 meters) with proper antenna, while the receiver decodes before feeding it to another microcontroller to drive DC motors via motor driver IC for necessary work. A metal detector circuit is mounted on the robot body and its operation is carried out automatically on sensing any metal underneath. As soon as the robot senses this metal it generates an alarm sound. This is to alert the operator of a possible metal ahead on its path.
