Model of culturally competent nursing care
Sample Solution
I used the Transcultural Nursing Model, developed by Madeleine Leininger, to develop interview questions. This model focuses on the importance of understanding the client's cultural background and values in order to provide culturally competent care.
Interview Questions
Here are some of the interview questions I used:
- What culture do you identify with?
- How does your culture define health and illness?
- What are your cultural beliefs and practices related to health maintenance, protection, and restoration?
- How has your culture influenced your views on health and healthcare?
Full Answer Section
- Have you ever experienced language or cultural barriers when accessing healthcare?

Answers Received
Here are some of the answers I received to the interview questions:
- The client identifies as Mexican-American.
- The client defines health as a state of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The client believes that illness is caused by an imbalance in the body, mind, and spirit.
- The client's cultural beliefs and practices related to health maintenance, protection, and restoration include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and practicing traditional Mexican healing methods.
- The client's culture has influenced their views on health and healthcare by emphasizing the importance of family and community support. The client also believes in the importance of traditional healing methods.
- The client has experienced language and cultural barriers when accessing healthcare in the past. For example, the client has had difficulty finding healthcare providers who speak Spanish. The client has also had difficulty understanding the instructions of healthcare providers who do not speak Spanish.
- The client has had difficulty communicating with healthcare professionals due to language and cultural differences. For example, the client has felt uncomfortable asking questions about their health or care because they were afraid of being judged.
Cultural Humility
Cultural humility is the process of self-reflection and awareness of one's own cultural biases. It is also the process of learning about and respecting the cultures of others.
Based on the information I gathered in the interview, the client is very connected to their Mexican-American culture. The client's culture has a significant impact on their views on health and healthcare. It is important for me to be culturally humble when providing care to this client. This means being aware of my own cultural biases and being open to learning about and respecting the client's culture.
Here are some specific ways I can practice cultural humility when providing care to this client:
- I can learn some basic Spanish phrases so that I can communicate with the client in their preferred language.
- I can research Mexican-American cultural beliefs and practices related to health and healthcare.
- I can ask the client about their cultural preferences and beliefs related to health and healthcare.
- I can be respectful of the client's cultural beliefs and practices, even if I do not agree with them.
- I can avoid making assumptions about the client's culture or beliefs.
- I can be willing to learn from the client about their culture and beliefs.
By practicing cultural humility, I can provide more culturally competent care to this client.
