Nonprofit organizations, while unified by their tax-exempt status and commitment to a public good, exhibit significant diversity in their structure, purpose, and activities. To illustrate this, let's compare two distinct types: 501(c)(3) Public Charities and 501(c)(4) Social Welfare Organizations. Understanding their similarities and differences is crucial for anyone engaging with the nonprofit sector.

501(c)(3) Public Charities

A 501(c)(3) public charity is perhaps the most well-known type of nonprofit. Its primary purpose is to serve charitable, religious, educational, scientific, literary, testing for public safety, fostering national or international amateur sports competition, and preventing cruelty to children or animals purposes. These organizations are distinguished by their ability to receive tax-deductible contributions from donors, making them highly attractive for philanthropic support. They are generally prohibited from engaging in substantial lobbying activities and absolutely forbidden from participating in political campaigns.
