NOW try holding your pencil point to the paper (like it is attached to the surface and you cannot NOW try playing with outlines and contour lines. Anyone can learn to draw. Try the following exercise several times over the week. Submit images of your drawings in a file attached below. You may use your phone, a camera or scanned photos of your drawings. THE ASSIGNMENT WILL ONLY ALLOW YOU TO SUBMIT ONCE BLIND CONTOUR DRAWING This is an exercise used by artists to train their eye and hand to work together. Actually, they are really training their brain to see new information and not take shortcuts by using information that it already knows. Use a soft pencil #2 or softer. A sheet of paper (computer paper will work fine) Make a drawing of your hand or foot. First, place your hand or foot on the paper and trace around it with the pencil. That will be your outline drawing that shows only a flat shape. Now try a contour line drawing (watch the demo below) Start by holding your pencil toward the top (not near the point) and play around with creating one continuous line (as if your pencil point is attached to the surface of the paper). You can pull the pencil, push the pencil, push hard to create darker lines, release pressure to create lighter lines but never let the pencil leave the surface of the paper. After you have played with that for a while, you are ready to try drawing your hand. Get a clean sheet of paper. Hold the pencil as before, decide on a hand or foot posture that you will draw (do not use a flat hand use different hand and foot positions. Point, use a soft fist, as in holding something in your palm etc. Decide where you would like your hand to be drawn on the sheet of paper and place your pencil down there. Look at the hand that you will draw and do not look back at your paper. Begin moving the pencil as you slowly look around and over the hand that you are drawing. As your eyes move over your hand, the pencil follows. Your drawing will not look very good the first few times but keep trying. Change your hand position. Follow the lines of your hand with the pencil pressing harder where you see darker lines. Remember that it is one continuous line and is not an outline.
