3.3: Write a paragraph in which you comment on Othello’s statement about the “curse of marriage” in his speech lines 299-318. What view of the genders is expressed? Discuss the image of the toad in a dungeon as it reveals Othello’s fear of the “forked plague,” the curse of cuckoldry. Why does Othello believe the high and mighty are more likely to be betrayed by their wives?
3.3: Write a paragraph in which you consider the importance of lines 334-368 to the unfolding plot. What do we discover from Emilia about the symbolic value of the handkerchief to Othello and Desdemona’s marriage? How is Emilia’s motive for dealing with the handkerchief like and unlike Desdemona’s? What do we learn about each marriage from these interactions?
3.3: Write a paragraph in which you trace Othello’s descent into jealous rage. Recall that when Cassio drunkenly brawls in the streets in Act 2, Scene3, Othello describes his anger with “My blood begins my safer guides to rule,” yet his only words to the culprit are “Cassio, I love thee,/But never more be officer of mine.” What has happened to Othello’s language in lines 490 and 501-502. How has his manner of speech changed and why?
