Parole and Liability
This exercise will result in two products — a written literature review and a bibliography on the topic chosen. A topic relevant to criminal justice administration will be chosen. (A list of appropriate topics can be found at the end of each module, other topics can be chosen with the assent of the instructor.)The student will review and summarize available research findings, hypotheses and best practices overviews for this topic. A bibliography will be developed describing the works utilized. Suggested topics can also be found at the end of each module.
Prepare a 15 – 20 page research paper on the topic chosen (average size). This paper size includes the face sheet or the bibliography and references. The suggested number of pages is simply to provide a sense of the size of the paper. It is not meant to be restrictive. Papers must conform to the format discussed in the instructions.Use APA style for the paper.
All references used must be cited on a separate page entitled “References”. See aforementioned APA style for citing sources.
The face sheet of the paper should contain the title of your paper, an abstract of the paper (less than 100 words) and information on the author (you) name, email address, major, and status (junior- senior etc.)
References should be generally from academic or technical sources. Avoid use of the textbook as a source for your term paper. Use articles from magazines and newspapers sparingly. Time magazine or People are generally not seen as authoritative sources. Web sites can be used and cited. However, be judicious in using websites for references. If you do use a website you must demonstrate that it is authoritative, not some dilettante. The APA style sheet will direct you how to cite websites. For legal research papers see cilegalresearch.htm
The quality and number of references and bibliographical items will be a factor in grading. Graduate papers are expected to have a minimum of 10-15 quality reference items. Again, be judicious in using websites for references. When using a website as a source, make sure that it an authoritative site. In fact, you should in either the body of your paper or in the bibliography itself substantiate why you consider this website as worthy of citation.
The research paper should address the following headings:
Introduction: this section will introduce the topic, provide a description of what exactly you are proposing to research, what you hope to accomplish, definitions of key words, and why the topic is important for criminal investigations.
Literature Review: What do we know about the topic? Has there been any research on the topic. If so what have been the findings. What are the issues relevant to the topic? Have there been court decisions. If so, what have the decisions concluded?
Summary of major points: Briefly review the major points made.
Conclusions: Discuss the future, what more is needed, what needs to be done.
