Paper Structure and Outline:
- Introduction
- Personal Vision Statement – What is your vision for your future as a social worker?
Remember a vision statement is not a specific goal. A vision is more of a philosophical
statement about how you want to be or the kind of change you want to affect as a leader,
without knowing specifically how you are going to accomplish it. Think of MLK’s “I
have a dream” speech. He had a vison about how the world could be but not a specific
plan about how to accomplish the vision. - Short Term (ST) Goals (1-3): Include 2-3 specific ST goals that you will need to
accomplish to start to realize your vision. How and what steps and actions must you take
to achieve the goals that will make your vision a reality? What strength/s will this goal
help you to strengthen or develop? What are the networks/relationships and resources
that you will need to cultivate to accomplish these goals? Include specific implementation
time frames (dates you will have each goal accomplished by). - Intermediate Term (IT) Goals (3-5 years): Include 2-3 specific IT goals that you will need
to accomplish to start to realize your vision. How and what steps and actions must you
take to achieve the goals that will make your vision a reality? What strength/s will this
2
goal help you to strengthen or develop? What are the networks/relationships and
resources that you will need to cultivate to accomplish these goals? Include specific
implementation time frames (dates you will have each goal accomplished by). - Long-term (LT) goals (5-10 years or more): Include 1-2 specific LT goals that you will
need to accomplish to start to realize your vision and describe at least one potential
achievement you would like to attain in the field. How and what steps and actions must
you take to achieve the goals that will make your vision a reality? What strength/s will
this goal help you to strengthen or develop? What are the networks/relationships and
resources that you will need to cultivate to accomplish these goals? Include specific
implementation time frames (dates you will have each goal accomplished by). - Conclusion – In addition to summarizing the main ideas you shared throughout the paper
please also, identify what might be the challenges faced as a male, female, or transgender
person, or a person of color, or in a female dominated profession, in accomplishing your
goals and in realizing your vision. How would you plan to confront these challenges?
What Knowledge, Skills and Actions (KSAs) would you need to acquire and apply to
overcome these challenges?
Your plan should be strategic and represent a clear and thoughtful articulation of your
development as a leader and a practitioner. Identify the areas for development clearly along
with your vision and goals. State actions you need to take and activities you need to engage in to
realize your aspirations. Each action plan should address implementation and include time
frames. Make your plan as realistic as possible.
