For this discussion board please share your thoughts on the 'problem of evil'. In our textbook Louise Antony's work on "No Good Reason - Exploring the Problem of Evil" should give us a starting point to tackle this these.   What is the problem of evil? Why do we suffer? How might we 'answer' the problem of evil? (be creative in your thinking here - but please keep in mind that this is a sensitive topic and should be approached with kindness and open minded thinking).

Sample Solution

The problem of evil is the question of how to reconcile the existence of evil and suffering with the existence of a God who is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good.

The problem of evil can be stated as follows:

  • If God is all-powerful, then he can prevent evil.
  • If God is all-knowing, then he knows about evil.
  • If God is all-good, then he wants to prevent evil.

But evil exists. Therefore, God cannot be all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good. There are many different solutions that have been proposed to the problem of evil. Some of these solutions include:
  • The free will defense: This solution argues that God has given humans free will, and that evil is the result of human choices.
  • The soul-making theodicy: This solution argues that evil is necessary for spiritual growth and development.
  • The mystery of evil: This solution argues that the problem of evil is a mystery that we cannot fully understand.
There is no one solution to the problem of evil that is universally accepted. Each person must decide for themselves what they believe. As for why we suffer, there are many different possible answers. Some possible answers include:
  • We suffer because of our own choices. We may make choices that lead to pain and suffering.
  • We suffer because of the choices of others. Other people may make choices that hurt us.
  • We suffer because of natural disasters. Natural disasters can cause great pain and suffering.
  • We suffer because of the nature of the world. The world is a fallen world, and there is pain and suffering in it.
  • We suffer because of God's love. God allows us to suffer in order to teach us and to bring us closer to him.
The answer to the question of why we suffer is not easy. It is a question that has been pondered by philosophers and theologians for centuries. There is no one answer that will satisfy everyone. But it is a question that is worth asking, because it can help us to understand the world and our place in it. Here are some additional thoughts on the problem of evil and suffering:
  • The problem of evil is not a new one. It has been around as long as there has been religion.
  • There is no easy answer to the problem of evil. It is a complex issue that cannot be solved by a simple formula.
  • The problem of evil can be a source of great pain and suffering for those who are struggling with it.
  • It is important to remember that we are not alone in our suffering. Others have also experienced pain and suffering, and there are people who care about us and want to help us.
  • It is also important to remember that there is hope. Even in the midst of suffering, we can find hope in God's love and mercy.
